Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Impact
as of May 2018
Right now, we are facing a global water and sanitation crisis.
Over 785 million people around the world don’t have access to safe water, 2 billion people don’t have access to safe toilets and 3 billion people lack basic hand washing facilities.
It's estimated that 95 people per hour are dying from preventable waterborne diseases (WHO 2018).
Lack of safe water, hygiene and sanitation can have devastating effects on all aspects of life (including health, livelihoods, future opportunities, and time).
That’s why we exist. Thankyou water and personal care products are changing this situation by funding water, sanitation and hygiene programs for people in need.
What we fund
We see a world where everyone, no matter where they were born, has access to safe water, hygiene, education and safe toilets for the rest of the lives.
However, we know that building more hardware and physical assets are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to ensuring communities get access to clean and safe water and toilets. Often, they can be a band aid solution that actually leaves communities worse off when they fail. In fact, it is estimated that between 30-40% of all wells in Sub Saharan Africa are broken. And 25% of water points are non-functional by the fourth year.
That’s why Thankyou’s water and personal care range funds community owned and managed solutions aimed at addressing systems change.
Our funding is therefore focused on creating
Positive, lasting change takes time, so we are committed to investing strategically for a long term outcome. We want to ensure entire communities are given not just bricks and mortar, but the tools and skills to build, repair and create a livelihood from the projects we support.
Our solution is to work with local impact partners + local government or private enterprises + communities. The depth and breadth of these partnerships help to enable systemic change at every level and ensure communities have access to clean water and safe toilets forever.
They say knowledge is power. That’s why we invest massively in education, training, advocacy and learning. From public awareness campaigns and spreading information in schools, to training up water pump and latrine repairers, we seek to empower change agents to be self-sufficient and be the solutions they seek.
While we fund tangible hardware solutions like water wells, piped water systems and filtration systems, every project is underpinned by training and education. We believe in investing in solutions that strengthen and build capacity in existing systems and structures to ensure access to clean water, safe toilets and hygienic practices are provided, forever.
